Bassingbourn Cricket ClubFour Years Not Out Now in its 4th year, the annual 7-a-side Competition, proved yet again to be a very successful event. The four teams taking part this year were Bassingbourn-A, Bassingbourn-B, Haslingfield and Cokenach (the current holders). Royston Teachers were not able to make this year’s event owing to a date change because of the previous wet weather, so Haslingfield were asked if they would like to enter, which they gladly accepted. The competition is played on a round-robin basis, each game being 8 overs in duration, with 2 overs per bowler maximum. Then the two teams finishing in top positions, play a final of 10 overs, with 3 overs max per bowler. The games were very competitive, but as per the last 2 years the 20-20 style music being played for in-going batsmen and on the fall of a wicket added a sense of fun to the event. Nearly all the games including the final went right down to the last over, which added extra excitement for onlookers, even the placements to get into the final came down to boundaries scored as 3 teams all finished level on points, Haslingfield just missing out on the Final. The Final The Final was between Bassingbourn-A and Cokenach who have won the event for the last 3 years. Bassingbourn-A elected to bat first and made a good start at 41 for 1, finally finishing on 102 for 2 in their allotted 10 overs. Mat Andrews top scored with 34 not out and Richard Scott made 20, with support from James Robinson (16) and Paul Pousland (18). Cokenach had a bad start losing Botten for 2 when the score was on 7, but recovered with scores from Stevens (17) and Seale (14), the followed by Clarke and Eve both finishing on 31 not out. Cokenach reaching their target of 103, but not until the 4th ball of the final over & taking the trophy once again, but with Bassingbourn putting up a good fight. Thus another exciting finish to what was a very good day for all. Congratulations.....Just a few mentions from the day:Phil Seale of Cokenach averaged 78 in the early rounds and Matt Andrews of Bassingbourn-A averaged 37.5 The top scorer of the day was Matt Stevens from Cokenach with 40. Cameron Taylor hit 6 x 4’s in one over, a record for the Bassingbourn 7’s, some outstanding catches were taken and terrific fielding too numerous to name all. With just a final word of thanks to Nicky and Keith who supplied all the catering on the day, especially the early morning bacon rolls!Once again thanks to all people who helped Fiona and I to run this event.
