CAMBRIDGESHIRE LIBRARIES LAUNCH THIRD CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK AWARD | | - Thousands of children around the county are expected to vote for their favourite illustrated book in a bid to find the Cambridgeshire Children’s Picture Book Award winner.
The third ‘Read it Again!’ Cambridgeshire Children’s Picture Book Award was launched at Benwick Primary School on Thursday, January 31, when last year’s winner Tim Hopwood was in school to talk to the children and to look at the eight books on this year’s shortlist.
‘Read it Again!’ is an award for a debut picture book where the story and pictures are the work of one individual. It is judged solely by the children of Cambridgeshire in Libraries, schools and reading groups.
Children read and discuss the short-listed books and then each child votes for their favourite title. The winner is announced at a special presentation ceremony held in June at the Burgess Hall, St Ives. The award ceremony is attended by each of the short-listed authors and an invited audience of over 300 children.
County Council Children’s Library Services Manager Richard Young, said: “The award has received considerable acclaim from publishers who welcome an award which celebrates and promotes new talent. Schools enjoy the award as it encourages children to explore new books. Many children write book reviews and correspond with the authors via letters and e-mail.”
Last year over 4,800 children voted and in this National Year of Reading, the County Council hopes to attract over 10,000 participants.
This year, the eight short-listed titles are: - “Sir Charlie Stinky Socks and the Really Big Adventure" by Kristina Stephenson
- “To the Beach” by Thomas Docherty
- “Monkey See, Monkey Do” by Donough O’ Malley
- “Max and the Doglins" by Amanda Montgomery Higham
- “Footprints in the Snow” by Mei Matsuoka
- “Timothy and the Strong Pyjamas” by Viviane Schwarz
- “Chicky Chicky Chook Chook” by Cathy MacLennan
- “Tip Tip Dig Dig” by Emma Garcia
